Raven’s Pina Colada Recipe
‘The Pina Colada - is it a drink, is it a song, is it blended or shaken?
A drink of many disguises but the story starts in Puerto Rico where it was created by bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton in 1954.
Keep It Simple and do it well, focus on flavors of pineapple, coconut and rum.
This drink is up to the interpretation of the bartender of course and this is where the creativity steps in. In my opinion, this tropical drink needs to stick to tropical ingredients, and ingredients are everything.
This is even more evident when we move into ingredients that are local and sometimes only found close to the bar that you are drinking at.
When I make a twist on a mixed drink, I try to stick to Mr Potato Head Theory. That means instead of trying to 'reinvent the wheel' per se, I like to 'adjust' what already works.
A good start is to use bananas in the colada mix. Use half of the original pineapple and the rest is banana. But my personal favorite is actually using fresh and ripe kiwis in the mix, namely the kiwi-colada.
Kiwi has a great texture and flavor to complement the rum and coconut cream mixture. I prefer to use spiced rum in this mix and thus 270° West Non Alcoholic Rum is a perfect choice for this as it is a really great substitute.
However keep in mind that we are making drinks (usually) for people that are not familiar with the taste of rum, or do not want it to overpower the mixed drink. Therefore I would not suggest more than 35ml in the actual drink.
So here are the ingredients:
35ml 270° West Non Alcoholic Rum from Drink Dry store
1 whole Kiwi (skinless)
1 slice of Pineapple (skinless)
40ml Coconut Milk
10ml Coconut Cream
Shake hard and pour with all the chunks and bits
We are introducing the alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of this exact drink in our new project in Seychelles called LXR Mango House by Hilton.
However, we have our own Mango Tree so it is only fitting to have a Mango twist on the Hilton creation, the Pina Colada, and with the help of 270° West Non Alcoholic Rum, we have the ingredients to keep everyone happy.
Cheers and Happy Shaking. Raven’
Is the Non-Alcoholic Pina Colada Healthy?
It absolutely is as the entire drink is made of fruits and their derivatives. Best of all, there is not a single drop of alcohol.
